Distinguish between an intention, an objective, a result and a certification
An intention expresses a direction. An objective adds a scope and a deadline. A result describes a measured situation. A certification attests to compliance with a standard in a given field. These categories can complement each other, but they are not interchangeable. Announcing an objective does not demonstrate its achievement; a label does not validate all of a group’s claims.
The first step of an audit consists of taking the sentences actually published: titles, commercial pages, press releases, speeches and responses to calls for tenders. For each, we identify the type of statement and what a reasonable reader could understand. The difficulty often appears when a title simplifies more than the data placed in the appendix.
The grid proposed here is an editorial tool from Belief System. It does not constitute an ESG rating, certification or legal validation of the allegations. It helps teams formulate verifiable questions and identify the necessary documents before publication.
Consider eight questions before publishing
| Question | Part or precision sought |
|---|---|
| What exactly are we promising? | A formulation that distinguishes objective and result |
| Who is affected? | Entities, products, sites, suppliers or populations covered |
| What period does the figure refer to? | Measurement date, deadline and update frequency |
| How do we measure progress? | Reference year and comparison method |
| How is the result calculated? | Definitions, assumptions, limits and possible method changes |
| Who takes action? | Responsible identified and means or steps documented |
| Who checks what? | Nature of source, internal control or scope of external assurance |
| What remains to be accomplished? | Gaps, exclusions, uncertainties and next update |
The absence of an answer to one of these questions does not prove that an undertaking is false. It indicates that the assertion must be specified, documented or limited. The correct response may be to publish narrower wording while the supporting data is verified.
Public example: reading a climate result without changing its meaning
In its Sustainability Impact 2021–2025 report published in 2026, Schneider Electric declares that it has enabled its customers to save and avoid 862 million tonnes of CO₂, for a target of 800 million. This is a company statement, cited as material for analysis. [1]
The first question concerns the purpose of the figure: emissions saved or avoided by customers must not be presented as an equivalent reduction in the group's own footprint. The second concerns the method: reference scenario, scope, period, aggregation and possible double counting. The third concerns the verifications actually carried out and their scope, to be found in the corresponding methodological documents.
The communication lesson is to keep the qualifiers that define the outcome. A simplification that removes “from clients”, the period or the nature of the calculation may produce a different statement from the source. A good proof sheet includes the exact wording of the indicator and explains its limitations in accessible language. This analysis does not conclude on the validity or invalidity of the published calculation.
Public example: specify what a certification certifies
Danone announced global B Corp certification on November 25, 2025. The editorial question is which entities are covered, on what date and according to which framework. This announcement should not be transformed into a general statement that each product is free from any impact. [1]
To document a formulation, we look for the entities concerned, the references of the certification system and the conditions of maintenance or updating. A certification and an operational indicator provide different information. They can be presented together provided that their connection is made explicit.
These two public examples are not presented as Belief System customer references. They are used to show how a communications department can read a source before using a number or a label. The name of a known company does not replace examination of the scope of its declaration.
Install a register of commitments
The register can contain the published sentence, its category, its scope, its source, the data manager, the validation date and the next revision. A link to the supporting document allows you to find the elements without restarting the investigation each time you speak. Access is adapted to the confidentiality of the parts; only publishable evidence is intended to appear on the site.
A procedure must be provided for method changes and delays. When an indicator changes, historical comparisons are explained. When an objective is not achieved, the communication describes the deviation, its documented causes and the decisions taken. An artificially recent update date gives no additional value to an unchanged proof.
This register can feed an accessible evidence page, media responses, investor documents and responses to team questions. It must also cover translations: a conditional objective in French cannot become a certain achievement in English, German or Chinese.
Making Evidence Useful to Readers and Engines
A proof page benefits from containing a direct answer, a definition of the indicator, the available data, their limits and the dated source. Important information must be readable on the page, without depending exclusively on a document that is difficult to navigate. Google's guide to AI features recommends making important content accessible in text form and matching structured data to visible content. [1]
This organization improves the usefulness and traceability of information; it does not guarantee a quote by an engine or assistant. Work on evidence and reputation can be combined with an AI visibility audit. The central question remains the same for all audiences: what conclusion does the available evidence really support?
