A new reputation space
A communications department may have a clear website, prepared spokespersons and solid media relations, all while discovering that an assistant is presenting the company with an old business, a poorly summarized commitment or expertise attributed to a competitor. The problem is not limited to a lost visit. It touches on the understanding of the organization at the moment when a reader forms an opinion. Our proposal is to treat this representation as a subject of corporate communication: information to be observed, responsibility to be organized and evidence to be made accessible.
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, refers to approaches aimed at improving the visibility and representation of an organization in the responses of generative engines. For a communications department, the useful objective is not to be cited on all questions. It consists of being correctly understood on subjects where the organization has responsibility, expertise or a legitimate point of view. This priority changes the diagnosis, the content to be produced and the indicators presented to general management.
Start with the questions that concern the company
A monitoring panel must be based on the public. A journalist seeks to understand a decision. A candidate wants to locate an organization. A partner verifies an expertise. An employee wonders about a transformation. These situations are not just a generic question about the most well-known companies in an industry. The communications department can bring together the teams that actually receive these requests and select a first limited set of questions, each related to an information need.
We propose to distinguish three families: identity, expertise and sensitive subjects. The first checks who the company is, what it does and who runs it. The second examines the topics on which it can be recognized as a resource. The third controls the controversies, commitments and transformations of which an inaccurate reading could have consequences. For each question, it is necessary to specify the language, the audience, the expected answer in a factual sense and the public evidence available. An expected response is not a favorable speech imposed on the engine.
Read the answer before commenting on the score
The diagnosis must keep the exact question, the service used, the date and the complete answer. You must then look at the cited sources and verify that they actually support the formulation. A mention may be correct but marginal; a citation may refer to an old page; a summary can mix two organizations. These situations require different interventions. Bringing them together in a single visibility indicator would make the priorities less readable.
A simple reading grid can follow four dimensions: exact identification, attribution of expertise, quality of evidence and presence of the necessary context. The assessments must be accompanied by an extract and justification. Two readers can rate sensitive responses to discuss disagreements. The result is a log of documented problems, with a responsible person and possible action. The score becomes a synthesis of this reading, not its replacement.
Build a public evidence base
Reliable information must first exist in an understandable form. The base can bring together an up-to-date institutional presentation, the responsibilities of managers, the activities actually carried out, the methods and publishable results. A commitment is distinguished from an achieved result. A study indicates its terrain and its limits. Expertise is demonstrated through reasoning, documented work, or an authorized case. This work serves readers before any consideration of selection by an engine.
Google specifies that the fundamentals of SEO remain applicable to its AI experiments: page access, internal links and content quality remain relevant. It does not announce any mandatory special files or magical markup guaranteeing presence. This documentation concerns Google services; it does not by itself describe all the assistants. The communications department may request an inventory of evidence before a schedule of articles. For each important statement: who validates it, where is it published, when should it be reviewed and what is missing to make it defensible? A service page does not make up for the lack of proof. Conversely, a solid study enclosed in a difficult-to-find document may benefit from being accompanied by a web summary, its method and references to the detailed results.
Connecting media relations, experts and proprietary content
Media relations and GEO share a need for substance, but their results are not interchangeable. A press article can inform an audience, confront a position or document a situation. The fact that it is then cited by an AI constitutes an additional observation. It does not justify choosing media solely based on their frequency of citation in a tool. The relevance of the readership, editorial independence and the quality of the subject remain specific criteria.
A thought leadership program can nourish this work if it brings something: an investigation, a method, an original analysis or an argued position. The expert must be able to assume what is assigned to him. The content of the site, the interventions and the reference documents must present coherent information, while responding to different uses. Consistency does not mean repeating the same text everywhere. It means that facts and responsibilities do not contradict each other.
Measuring a representation, without promising to control it
A dashboard for the executive team can distinguish panel coverage, response accuracy, citation quality, and priority error handling. It should display the denominators. For example, 18 correct responses out of 24 responses reviewed describe this sample, not 75% of all market conversations. This example is fictitious. Comparisons require a stable core of questions and services; a modification of the panel must remain visible.
Public trust, preference and decisions call for further observations. A better presence in the responses does not alone demonstrate an effect on these dimensions. The right steering meeting results in a decision: correct a biography, clarify an activity, publish a method, consolidate two redundant pages or explore a subject that is not yet documented. The measurement tool must make it possible to return to the observed response. A graph whose calculation no one can explain is insufficient to arbitrate an investment.
A starting program in three sequences
The first sequence consists of setting the perimeter and producing the initial diagnosis. It brings together communications, business experts and a web team. It identifies outdated information, sensitive topics and resources already available. The second processes priority corrections and builds some reference content, with named validations. The third examines the new observations and decides whether to continue, adjust or shift the effort. The timeline depends on access to evidence and teams; no duration guarantees an evolution of the responses.
The distribution of responsibilities matters as much as production. Communication drives the public narrative and the editorial approach. The professions validate the facts. The web team ensures the technical conditions. The legal and security functions intervene depending on the subject. Management arbitrates the commitments that the organization can actually make. This governance avoids entrusting a tool with a responsibility that only the company can exercise.
The GEO can thus become a concrete extension of the mandate of the communications department: observing how the organization is understood, making its evidence accessible and correcting the inconsistencies that weaken its words. The desired result is a fairer and more useful representation to audiences. Visibility is one dimension, among others.
