A helpful editorial board chooses questions the organization can shed light on and vets ways to produce a strong contribution. The calendar comes next. If the meeting is all about filling boxes, topics are selected for availability rather than interest.

The communications department must bring together three functions: knowledge of the public, expertise on the subject and editorial judgment. They can be worn by few people. The main thing is to distinguish responsibilities and give the committee the right to report content for which proof is lacking.

Bring questions, not working titles

Each proposal can be based on a question heard in an interview, a customer relationship, an internal meeting or a public conversation. It is necessary to specify who is asking it, why it matters and what the organization knows in particular. This wording makes it easier to compare ideas.

“Publish about transformation” remains too broad. “How can we explain a change where certain terms have not yet been decided? » describes a problem. The committee can then look for experiences, documents and people capable of processing it. He can also see that an existing article already meets the need and choose to enrich it.

Separate editorial interest and maturity of proof

A topic may be important but insufficiently documented. Another may be easy to produce but not very useful. Both dimensions must remain visible. A simple grid examines audience interest, available contribution, sensitivity and work required.

Google's recommendations for useful content emphasize the value provided to the reader. In the committee, this principle translates into a practical question: after reading, what will we understand better or what can we decide differently? If the answer is unclear, you must rework the angle before ordering the text. [1]

Give the bottom an owner

The editorial manager organizes the content, but he cannot validate all the statements alone. Each file must have a referent capable of verifying the facts and limits. The person signing must be able to recognize their thoughts and discuss the formulations that commit them.

This organization avoids late validation by a large number of interlocutors. The committee specifies from the start the people to consult, the necessary documents and the sensitive points. A deadline is credible when it incorporates this work, not when it assumes that a general rereading will resolve all the uncertainties at the end of the process.

Anticipate the contradiction

Before publication, a person can play the role of skeptical reader: what argument is missing, what generalization seems excessive, what objection has been circumvented? This work must be substantive. It is not a question of adding reservations everywhere, but of making the reasoning more robust.

The charter of the International Federation of Journalists recalls the distinction between facts and comments. Without equating corporate communication and independent journalism, this distinction is useful to the editorial discipline: the reader must understand when the organization describes an observation and when it defends an interpretation. [1]

A meeting must produce decisions

The report can be contained in a list of subjects retained, enriched, postponed or abandoned, with a reason and a person responsible. It must also indicate the data to be obtained and the old content to be revised. An article is not finished forever the day it is published.

The quality of the committee is measured by the relevance of the choices and the fluidity of the work, not by the number of publications launched. A less full calendar can be more influential if each piece of content provides an identifiable idea, accessible evidence, and a precise answer to a real question.
