Strikes and labour disputes: communicating in support of dialogue
Communication of a social conflict must preserve the possibility of discussion while providing reliable information on the activity. It can neither negotiate on behalf of the actors nor erase disagreements.
Clarify the mandate of each actor
Management, human resources, social relations and communication must distinguish between negotiation, decision and information. Establish who can announce a proposal, agreement or operational development. A working hypothesis should not be presented as an acquired compromise. The company’s narrative can explain its constraints without attributing intentions to the people or organizations that challenge its position.
Inform employees and customers precisely
Teams need to know who they're talking to and what's next. Customers need verified information about the service. Avoid lists of names, comments on individual situations and guilt-inducing formulations. Don’t promise business continuity that operations can’t guarantee. Managers receive actionable responses, including acknowledgment that an item remains under discussion.
Scenario: a company in the transport sector
Illustrative example: a social movement affects certain connections. Messages to travelers indicate the confirmed perimeter, available possibilities and update time. Social exchanges follow their own schedule. External communication does not publish an alleged agreement before validation and does not use customers as a lever to pressure employees.
Exit the conflict without proclaiming a winner
Once an agreement has been reached, explain its confirmed provisions, next steps and follow-up arrangements. If disagreement persists, stay specific about what is changing and what is not changing. The report analyzes misunderstandings, contradictory information and the preparation of managers. A drop in media visibility does not alone demonstrate the restoration of the internal relationship.

Write to Belief SystemIndia–France: prepare a shared crisis response
For an Indian business in France, first decide who can act locally while headquarters establishes the facts. Assign a French response owner, an Indian executive sponsor and backups for approvals across time zones. Maintain one incident record, distinguishing confirmed impact from investigation hypotheses. For personal data breaches, the CNIL differentiates documentation, regulator notification and information for affected individuals according to the risk. The communication workflow should support the duties established by specialists, with French-language customer support and consistent headquarters briefings.
Illustrative scenario: an Indian technology provider discovers an incident affecting a French customer portal. The French team needs verified information about service availability and practical assistance while the technical team investigates in India. Pre-agreed escalation rules allow a holding statement and an update time without waiting for a complete root-cause report. Prepare customer, employee and media answers from the same evidence. After resolution, explain the corrective actions that can be substantiated and review the response gaps. Neither silence nor an unsupported assurance of complete safety helps restore trust.
This edition retains the French and European context of the analysis. The market note addresses its use by Indian headquarters and their French or European teams.
