Greenwashing allegations: check the claims before defending the narrative
An environmental controversy often centers on the gap between a public formulation and the available evidence. The first answer is to look at the exact message, its scope, and what the audience could reasonably understand.
Audit the disputed claim
Gather the text, image, media, dates and evidence used. A result on one activity does not justify a promise on the entire company. Distinguish future objective, action taken and observed result. The ADEME guide provides points for vigilance on allegations; the analysis must then focus on the facts specific to the organization.
Choosing between explanation and correction
When the message is accurate but incomplete, make its scope and limits legible. Where it is misleading or insufficiently supported, correct the relevant materials and explain the change. Avoid answering a question about evidence with a list of unrelated initiatives. Technical and legal experts examine the elements, communication organizes a coherent response.
Scenario: a company in the mobility sector
Illustrative example: a campaign describes a service with an environmental formula that is too general. The company verifies the hypotheses, the life cycle phases covered and the comparison used. It replaces, if necessary, the formula with circumscribed and traceable information. Customer service and partners have the same corrected version.
Install evidence governance
Associate each claim with an owner, source, validity period, and review date. Translations must keep the caveats: a stronger adjective in a foreign version can recreate the problem. The report measures the corrections made and the robustness of the validation process. A reputation campaign is not a substitute for necessary operational changes.

Write to Belief SystemIndia–France: prepare a shared crisis response
For an Indian business in France, first decide who can act locally while headquarters establishes the facts. Assign a French response owner, an Indian executive sponsor and backups for approvals across time zones. Maintain one incident record, distinguishing confirmed impact from investigation hypotheses. For personal data breaches, the CNIL differentiates documentation, regulator notification and information for affected individuals according to the risk. The communication workflow should support the duties established by specialists, with French-language customer support and consistent headquarters briefings.
Illustrative scenario: an Indian technology provider discovers an incident affecting a French customer portal. The French team needs verified information about service availability and practical assistance while the technical team investigates in India. Pre-agreed escalation rules allow a holding statement and an update time without waiting for a complete root-cause report. Prepare customer, employee and media answers from the same evidence. After resolution, explain the corrective actions that can be substantiated and review the response gaps. Neither silence nor an unsupported assurance of complete safety helps restore trust.
This edition retains the French and European context of the analysis. The market note addresses its use by Indian headquarters and their French or European teams.
