Greenwashing allegations: test the evidence before defending the narrative
An environmental controversy often concerns the gap between a public statement and its supporting evidence. Start with the exact claim, its scope and what an audience could reasonably understand.
Audit the disputed claim
Collect wording, visuals, channels, dates and evidence used. A result for one activity does not support a company-wide promise. Distinguish a future target, work underway and an observed outcome. ADEME's guidance offers useful questions; the actual assessment must use evidence specific to the organisation.
Decide whether to clarify or correct
If a claim is accurate but incomplete, make its boundaries visible. If misleading or inadequately supported, correct the relevant materials and explain the change. A list of unrelated sustainability initiatives does not answer a challenge about evidence. Technical and legal specialists assess the facts; communications coordinates the response.
Illustrative scenario: a mobility company
A campaign makes an overly broad environmental statement. The company reviews assumptions, lifecycle stages covered and the comparison used. Where needed, it replaces the statement with a bounded, traceable claim. Customer teams and partners receive the corrected wording. The scenario is illustrative, not a client case.
Create a system for maintaining evidence
Give each claim an owner, source, validity period and review date. Translations must retain qualifications: a stronger adjective can recreate the problem in another language. US, UK and EU requirements should be checked for each intended market rather than assumed identical. Review actual corrections and approval quality. A reputation campaign cannot substitute for necessary operational changes.
