The media promotion of a study must make its lessons and the conditions in which they were produced accessible. The press kit presents the corpus, the method, the limits and the results. A strong formula can attract attention; it should not expand the scope of the data.
The communications department has a translation role. It helps readers understand what the study provides without transforming an observation into a general truth. Preparing for the launch must therefore begin with the people who conducted the analysis, before choosing the title and visuals.
Choose a central education
A study may contain several interesting results, but the launch needs a main angle. This must be both important to the public and solidly supported. A spectacular secondary figure should not take the place of a more structuring conclusion.
The title must remain compatible with the method. An opinion survey, a qualitative study and a data analysis do not allow the same formulations. The ICC/ESOMAR code constitutes a benchmark for the responsible presentation of results. The file must allow a journalist to find the perimeter without asking several times. [1]
Prepare a readable method sheet
The sheet indicates the period, the population or corpus, the method of collection, the analysis criteria and the main limits. It distinguishes observed data from interpretations. If the study is sponsored, the identity of the sponsor is clear.
For a qualitative study, it is necessary to explain what the interviews allow us to understand and avoid attributing to them an automatic representativeness. For a quantitative survey, the bases and wording of the questions must be able to be examined. Methodological precision is a part of credibility, not an appendix intended to discourage reading.
Plan for objections before the interview
Why this corpus? Which people have not been heard? What other explanations are possible? Can the results be compared to a previous edition? These questions should be prepared with the authors, not discovered at launch.
The charter of the International Federation of Journalists recalls the role of verification. The team must therefore organize access to the communicable elements and identify the person capable of responding to the method. The institutional spokesperson and the study manager may have complementary roles. [1]
Design media that retain meaning
A chart should display the base, time period, and useful categories. A quotation must respect the context and the conditions of reuse. A short extract must retain the reservation which changes the interpretation. Visuals should not provide precision that data does not possess.
In a fictitious case, an observation from a few interviews is presented as an “observed signal” and accompanied by an explanation. It does not become a national percentage. The subject can remain strong: it describes a tension that deserves to be discussed, with a transparent method.
Prepare for post-launch
Questions from journalists may reveal a need for clarification. The reference page must be able to be corrected or enriched, with a trace of significant modifications. The thematic files then allow the results to be explored in greater depth without repeating the press release.
The assessment examines the way in which the lessons were taken up. If a boundary disappears regularly, it may need to be made more visible in the materials. A study gains influence when its results circulate with their proper scope, and when the method allows others to discuss them seriously.
