SEO works on the discovery and understanding of pages in search engines. GEO is interested in the representation of an organization and its contents in generative responses. The two approaches share editorial quality and accessibility needs, but their observations are not interchangeable.
For the communications department, the question is not about choosing an acronym. It is knowing who guarantees the accuracy of the information, who produces the evidence and who verifies that the pages can be consulted. This coordination requires sharing responsibilities with experts and the web team.
What communication can actually support
Communication defines the priority questions of the public, clarifies the offer and organizes the reference content. She checks the consistency of descriptions of the organization and prepares responses to sensitive subjects. It can also analyze the sources that contribute to reputation in the observed responses.
Business experts remain responsible for validating the facts in their field. The web team deals with the technical conditions of access and display. A project led by a single function risks favoring its own angle: producing texts without technical diagnosis, or correcting pages without examining what they say.
Common fundamentals, distinct measures
Google's Search Essentials present the conditions and best practices for search. For its AI features, Google indicates that these fundamentals remain applicable. This doesn't mean that good positioning on a query will automatically result in a citation in every generative answer. [1] [2]
The dashboard must therefore maintain several readings: access to pages, visibility in search, presence in AI responses and accuracy of information. Traffic data describes recorded visits; GEO observations describe answers to a range of questions. None of these sets alone represents the entire relationship with the public.
The same content can serve several purposes
A page that precisely explains a method can help a reader to choose support, a journalist to verify information and an engine to understand a subject. The content must first provide this service. It does not become better because it multiplies the formulations of the same expression.
The page benefits from answering a central question, defining useful terms and making the evidence accessible. Internal links direct you to more in-depth information. A clear description of the offer can specify the situations addressed, the approach and the deliverables, without inventing customer results to appear more authoritarian.
Organize a joint review
The SEO/GEO review can bring together communication, web and experts around a limited number of questions: which pages count, which errors recur, what information is missing and what obstacles prevent access? Each action is linked to a person responsible and a control.
In a fictional case, an organization finds that its expertise is described too broadly. The response may include a more specific offer page, two method files and updating public biographies. If the page is not accessible correctly, producing new articles is not enough. If the content remains vague, a technical correction does not solve the entire problem.
Choose sustainable goals
The first objective may be the correction of essential information and the availability of evidence. The next one may concern the presence observed in a stable panel of questions. These stages must be kept separate to understand what is progressing and what remains uncertain.
SEO and GEO then become dimensions of the same editorial responsibility: making the organization understandable and verifiable. The communications department provides knowledge of audiences and judgment on messages; the quality of the result depends on its cooperation with the people who have the facts and control the site.
