Corporate disinformation campaigns: correct the record without amplifying manipulation
Companies must distinguish legitimate criticism, error and coordinated misleading activity. The right response depends on evidence, exposed audiences and potential harm, not message volume alone.
Assess the claim before assuming intent
Archive assertions, original sources, dates and observable channels. Repetition does not prove coordination, and anonymity does not prove foreign involvement. Separate false facts, disputed interpretations and unfavourable opinions. This prevents communications teams from treating documented criticism as an attack to suppress.
Choose a proportionate correction
A direct reply may be sufficient for a limited audience; a reference page helps when the same error circulates widely. Lead with the accurate fact, evidence and date, then briefly identify the incorrect claim. Avoid unnecessarily distributing its links and images. Platform reports should use preserved evidence and the applicable platform rules.
Illustrative scenario: an agrifood company
Several accounts repeat incorrect information about a product's origin. The company verifies the exact product and market, prepares a sourced answer and equips customer service. It acknowledges evidence limits instead of generalising across all products. Any genuine inconsistency discovered is addressed separately. The scenario does not describe a client incident.
Measure whether correction reaches people
Track sources still repeating the error, customer questions and use of the reference page. Less online activity does not prove a change of belief. For AI answers, repeat a stable question panel and inspect cited sources. International teams should check which language versions and distribution channels carry the claim; translating a headquarters rebuttal alone may miss the audience affected.
