A GEO audit examines how an organization appears in a defined set of AI-generated responses. It analyzes the presence of the brand, the accuracy of the information and the sources used. To be comparable over time, it must retain the questions, observation parameters and responses examined.

The first deliverable is therefore not a score. It's a protocol. Without it, an apparent improvement may come from another driver, a reformulation of the questions or a change in scope. Communications management must be able to understand what is actually being measured before choosing actions.

Define the decisions that the audit must inform

The objective may be to correct an erroneous description, to make expertise more identifiable or to understand the sources associated with a controversy. These needs do not raise exactly the same questions. An audit that only contains the name of the organization mainly describes responses to requests already directed towards it.

The panel must include questions related to the needs of the public: understanding a method, comparing approaches or seeking support. Brand questions remain useful for accuracy. You just have to analyze them separately. Adding more favorable questions does not improve representation.

Establish a collection protocol

The observation sheet specifies the text of the question, the language, the country when this parameter is available, the engine or channel, the date and the conditions of collection. It keeps the answer and the links. Repetitions are used to observe variability, without assuming that each response is independent of all others.

The protocol must distinguish between an absent response, a collection error and a response that does not mention the organization. These cases should not all be coded as absence of mark. The denominator presented with each indicator must correspond to the observations that can actually be used.

Code presence, accuracy and sources

The presence indicates that the brand is named. Accuracy examines what is said: activity, scope, commitments, people or references. The sources describe the pages retrieved or cited, depending on the information accessible. A citation from the field and a recommendation from the organization are two separate observations.

The NIST profile on generative AI notably identifies the risk of erroneous content presented with confidence. The audit must therefore verify material assertions against established benchmarks. The fluency of the response does not constitute proof of its reliability. [1]

Link the diagnosis to the pages to work on

A recurring error could result in an outdated page, conflicting information, or identity confusion. A low presence can have several explanations; the audit must examine the sources before concluding that there is a lack of content. Actions may concern the clarity of the offer, access to evidence or information published by third parties.

For Google's AI features, the documentation states that SEO fundamentals remain relevant and no special markup guarantees appearance. Google Search Central is the reference for this specific area; this indication should not be transformed into a universal rule for all engines. [1]

Prepare the following comparison

The report maintains a list of proposed changes with their rationale. During the next check, the main panel remains stable. New questions are monitored separately so as not to confuse extension of coverage and evolution of performance.

A useful audit allows you to reproduce the reading: find an answer, check the coding and understand why a page was prioritized. It gives the communications department a reputation and expertise diagnostic tool. It does not promise stable rankings or guaranteed quotes.
